The Return of Sherlock Holmes is the triumphant collection that brings Sherlock Holmes back to life after his presumed death, containing thirteen stories originally published in 1903–1904. Set in the early 1900s, the opening story "The Adventure of the Empty House" delights readers as Dr. Watson – and the world – learn that Holmes survived his grapple with Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls. Holmes dramatically reappears, brushing aside a near-miss sniper shot from Colonel Moran (Moriarty's vengeful lieutenant), and explains his three-year absence spent traveling in disguise as a Norwegian explorer. With the Great Detective's return, he and Watson resume solving baffling mysteries in an evolving Edwardian London. This collection includes some of Doyle's finest plotting: "The Dancing Men," wherein childlike chalk figures terrorize a country wife until Holmes deciphers their chilling message; "The Solitary Cyclist," a tale of a young woman stalked by a mysterious bicyclist on quiet Surrey lanes; and "Charles Augustus Milverton," in which Holmes turns vigilante to confront a brutal blackmailer – even burgling Milverton's house (Watson accompanying with a revolver). Throughout the stories, Holmes is a shade more human – his reunion with Watson in Empty House is genuinely warm – yet his brilliance remains unparalleled, whether unmasking a fake ghostly hound in "The Priory School" kidnapping case or undercover as an Irish-American thug in "The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter." The collection's tone mixes classic Baker Street nostalgia with fresh intrigue, reflecting changes of the new century (cars and telephones creeping into plots). Notably, Return climaxes with "The Adventure of the Second Stain," a top-secret diplomatic crisis that Holmes deftly resolves, proving his indispensability to Britain. The Return of Sherlock Holmes was eagerly welcomed by fans and stands as a particularly strong set of detective tales, showcasing Holmes's enduring adaptability and Doyle's renewed enthusiasm. It reaffirms that though Holmes had vanished, when London's crimes grow most complex, the violin-playing sleuth will always return to Baker Street – pipe in mouth and ready for the next adventure.
